The Houston Herald, Houston, Missouri, July 20, 1995...
Donald Earl Jones, 64, son of Zelmer Earl Neff and Eunice Leona Jones, was born Jan. 27, 1931, at Sullivan. He died July 16, 1995, at his home at Tyrone.
Weighing two pounds and eight ounces at birth, a kitchen oven was his incubator and an eyedropper was his nursing bottle for the first days of his life. Raised by his maternal grandparents, Ottie and Martha Jones, he legally changed his name to Jones in 1950.
He married Rosalee "Babe" Slone Oct. 3, 1949, in Tulsa, Okla. They moved to the Tyrone community in 1956.
Mr. Jones' first jobs in the area were in concrete and agriculture. Beginning in 1952, he worked for the City of Cabool as a heavy equipment operator for 16 years until health complications due to kidney failure forced his retirement in 1988.
He joined the National Horseshoe Pitching Association and won his first trophy in 1976. At the tournaments for the Missouri State Championships, he was Class B Champion in 1878, '79, and '82 and Class C Champion in 1986. At the World Horseshoe Tournament in Statesville, .C., he was Class D Champion in 1983 with an average score of 61.
He was a member of the Elk Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosalee; a daughter, Donna McConnaughhay of Rolla; two brothers, Leroy Neff of Waynesville and Howard Neeley of Eldon; and a grandson.
Services were July 19 at the Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home Chapel in Cabool with the Rev. Harold Smith officiating. Burial was in the Nagle Cemetery near Tyrone.
