William Berry Hester, 73, of Steele, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at his home, surrounded by family and friends. Berry's life ended on almost the exact spot where it began.

Born January 11, 1938, he is the son of the late Bynum and Edna "Sis" Wright Hester.

Although he was a local farmer for most of his life, Berry retired from Nucor-Yamato Steel in 2000 after 14 years as a crane operation.

He enjoyed a lifelong love of animals, especially horses. He was happiest on horseback and he loved sharing that experience with others. He was one of the primary organizers of the annual Bootheel Trail Ride for many years and he really enjoyed giving pony cart rides at birthday parties and church and school events.

Mr. Hester leaves his wife of 53 years, Margie Hester, of Steele;
One son, Kevin Hester, of Steele;
One daughter, Leslie Hester of Jonesboro, Ark.;
Two granddaughters: Jennifer Hammock and Abby Mathenia, both of Steele; and
A great-granddaughter, Jalynn Hammock, of Steele.

Graveside services for Mr. Hester were held at 12 p.m. Saturday, October 8 at the Mt. Zion cemetery in Steele with John W. German Funeral Home of Steele in charge of services.

Pallbearers were his nephews: Scott johnson, Neel Johnson, Joe Johnson, Brian Lynn, Chris Thomas, Jeremy Thomas and Kelly Thomas and his brother-in-law, Terry Tackett.
