Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist Church, west of Washburn, for Wayne Poe, 26, who was burned to death about 1:15 o'clock Sunday morning. Services were conducted by Rev. Chas. VanZandt and burial was made in the Hickman Cemetery under direction of the Culver funeral home of Cassville. Poe lost his life in a fire which destroyed his one-room farm home, near Washburn. The dwelling, located in a wooded area, burned to the ground and not until the embers cooled was Coroner Paul Henbest able to extricate the body. There is only supposition as to the origin of the fire. There has been different stories in regard to the events leading up to the fatal fire, but one report is that Poe, his wife and two small children had attended a picture show Saturday night. Upon their return, the other members of this family stopped at the home of his mother, Mrs. Oma Poe, for the night and Poe went on to his cabin a short distance away. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Bernice Poe; his mother and two daughters Shirley Ann, 2 years old, and Joyce Darlene, 4; five brothers and one sister. Poe was born in Barry County and had spent his entire life in the Washburn community.
