Chester A. Barnes died at the Heritage Nursing Facility in Kennett, Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at the age of 89.
He was born in Portia, Ark., May 20, 1922, and was one of seven children of Ollie and Luana Brooks Barnes.
Chester is survived by his wife, Rubye Barnes, of Kennett; his brother, Cecil Barnes, of Steele, Mo.; four children, a son, Bradley Barnes of Apache Junction, Ariz., daughter, Janice Curry, of Campbell, Mo., daughter, Luana Loomis, of Albuquerque, N.M., and daughter, Laurie Gibbons, of Kennett; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Chester served in the U.S. Army Corp during WWII in England as a P-38 and P-51 fighter pilot. He separated from the Air Corp after the war as a Major with numerous combat decorations.
Chester and Rubye lived in Steele for over 50 years, where he managed the Standard Oil bulk plant and sold oil and gas products to local farmers and businessmen.
After his retirement he spent many years hunting birds with his dog, Sport, and visiting his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Steele congregation of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at John German Funeral Home with John Mundy officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Steele.
