Paul Malcom Howerton, a Wells Fargo and later American Railway Express agent, was born on July 27, 1895 in Excelsior Springs, Clay Co., Missouri, the son of Rev. Robert W. Howerton and Adelia Smith. Prior to his WWI draft registration in 1917, Paul served three years as a musician in the Missouri National Guard. His father had died the year before and was buried in Llewellyn Cemetery, leaving Paul the sole support of his widowed mother.

Paul was married on April 6, 1918 in Kirksville, Adair Co., Missouri, to Julia Husted. He and Julia owned a home on Elm Street in Kirksville. They were the parents of Juanita R. Howerton (c1919-??), Mary Louise (Howerton) Roy (1922-1962), and Paul Malcolm Howerton, Jr. (1925-2011).

In 1933, Paul was diagnosed with chronic endocarditis. He died six years later on November 16, 1939 and was buried in Maple Hills Cemetery, survived by his wife, children, a brother in Granite City, Illinois, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Erne, in Del Monte, California.

Julia remarried on May 3, 1943 in Kirksville to Ralph S. Cross.
