Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church at Steele, Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., for Mrs. Burbon Smith, wife of Shirley Smith, who passed away last Friday, July 30th at her home.
Mrs. Burbon Elizabeth Polk Smith was born in Cerro Gordo, Tenn., July 16, 1893, and lived there until the age of nine, when the family moved to Steele, where she remained until her death. She was converted at an early age, joined the Baptist church, and was a faithful worker until her health no longer permitted the activities.
On June 20th, 1923, she was united in marriage to Shirley M. Smith of Steele. To this union was born four children. Two of them, Polkie and Mary Sue, preceded her in death in infancy.
Those surviving are her husband, Shirley M. Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Lois Frakes of Winter Haven, Florida, and Mrs. Elizabeth Fry, of Hayti; one brother, Gene Polk of Steele; two granddaughters, Vicki and Jill Frakes of Winter Haven, Florida; Otho Stanfield of Blytheville, Ark., and Odis Stanfield of Waynesboro, Tenn., whom she reared and a host of other relatives and friends.
Rev. Howard Hamrick officiated at funeral services, assisted by Rev. W.H. Cook and Rev. Marvin Niblack. Interment was at Mt. Zion Cemetery and German Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Shirley Moran Smith died at Kennedy Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis on July 12, 1961. He was 66 years, 4 months and 11 days of age.

Mr. Smith, a retired barber, was well known to citizens of this community. He was a member of the Steele Lodge Number 634, A.F. and A.M.

A veteran of World War I, he served in Company B, 139th Infantry, U.S. Army.

He was born in Brighton, Tenn., April 1, 1895.

Funeral services were from the First Baptist Church, Steele, Friday, July 14, 1961 at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. James F. McCrary, pastor, officiating.

Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Masonic Graveside services. John W. German Mt. Zion Chapel was in charge of services.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas R. Frakes, Winter Haven, Fla., Mrs. Gene G. Fry, Winter Haven, Fla., a brother, Floyd Smith of Steele; a sister, Mrs. D. L. Potts of Steele,and two grandchildren in addition to other relatives and friends.

Pall bearers were Fred Kelley, Jack Dowdy, Carl Sheeley, P.G. Morgan, Jack Manning and Frank Wisdom.
