Abner Ashcraft, 40, died Sunday afternoon in a Blytheville hospital of injuries he sustained on March 26 when late that day, his car collided with the rear of a truck in the Webb farm near the state line on Highway 61 as he was enroute to Blytheville to attend a tractor meeting of some sort. He suffered several broken ribs, a punctured lung and other injuries, which eventually proved fatal.
After an operation was performed in the Blytheville hospital, Ashcraft seemed definitely improved, so he was taken to his home in Cooter on April 9. Complications developed Saturday night, however, and he was returned to the hopsital, an abscess having formed on the injured lung and his death occurred at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Cooter Baptist church by the Rev. H.W. Pierce and interment was in Mt. Zion cemetery nearby.
Mr. Ashcraft was born at Casa, Ark., October 2, 1905, the son of the late Mrs. Grace Jones of Cooter. He had lived many years in Missouri, however, and for the past 14 years had served as marshal of the town of Cooter, also conducting a taxi business and a mail route much of this time.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frankie Spencer Ashcraft and a son and daughter, Abner Jr. and Maureen. Four brothers and one sister survive, being A.T. Ashcraft of Lilbourn, Mo. and Ray, Elmer and Glen Jones of Cooter and Mrs. Ernest Ward of St. Louis.
Ashcraft, who was conscious following this accident, told investigating officers that he did not see the truck until he was close upon it as it came to a halt on the highway in preparation for a left turn onto the Webb farm premises. The truck was driven by John Pointer, negro employee of A.H. Webb, owner of the farm. Ashcraft's car was practically demolished by the crash.
