Cecil Johnson, 21-year old resident of Caruthersville Route 1, was fatally injured Thanksgiving day, November 26, when the car he was driving alone was hit by a Cotton Belt train at the crossing on the "lover's lane" road near Stubbtown, a connecting road between Highway 84 and Route U. His 1951 Nash auto was demolished.
According to info given officers investigating the accident, Mr. Johnson drove onto the crossing in front of the approaching train, a local freight, though the engineer, J.G. Sinclair, said both the train whistle and bell were sounding at the time. The impact carried the vehicle about 74 feet down the track.

Mr. Johnson was born March 21, 1938 in Lawrence County, Ala., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Johnson and the family moved to near Caruthersville about seven years ago. He was employed as a truck driver by Odell Grooms.
In addition to his parents, he leaves his wife, Melba Johnson and a son, Cecil Wayne, one year old, of Route 1, City; four sisters, Fonda Sue Johnson of the parent's home, Mrs. Josephine Givens, Mrs. Racine Givins and Mrs. Fay Nell Riggs, all of Coleman, Ala. and four brothers, G.W., Crawford, Coy Gene and Ethyle Johnson, all of the home.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Jameson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery at Steele with Jimmy Osburn Funeral Home of Hayti in charge.
