Funeral services for James L. Cassidy, 58 year old Deering High School teacher, were held Wednesday afternoon January 15, 1958 at 2 o'clock in the Cooter High School gymnasium with the Rev. Howard Hamrick and Rev. W. E. Hall officiating.
Mr. Cassidy, who had taught 37 years in Pemiscot County schools, the longest continuous tenure of service of any man teacher in the county, died Monday morning in the Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital, Hayti, where he had spent about a week. He had been ill much of the fall and had spent several weeks previously at the Doctor's Hospital, Poplar Bluff. He was teacher in the Deering high school.
Mr. Cassidy was born near Cooter, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Cassidy pioneer residents of that community. He completed his high school work at Will Mayfield College, Marble Hill and possibly did some college work there. He received his degree from Arkansas State College, Jonesboro, Ark. He had taught at Cooter, Steele and Deering, where he was teaching at the time of his death. He had also taught in several of the rural schools of the county.
He was active in the Pemiscot County Teachers Association and has served as secretary-treasurer of that group for 17 years.
He was a member of the Baptist Church at Steele, and was a grand officer in the Grand Encampment of IOOF of Missouri. He was also a member of the Masonic order.
The Steele Lodge of IOOF held partial services at the gymnasium following the funeral sermon by Rev. Hamrick.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Floyd Mitchell Cassidy of Freeport, ILL, Thomas William Cassidy of New Orleans, La., and James L. Cassidy, Jr. of Pontiac, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Lincoln of Hayti, Mo.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Huddleston of St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Miss Cecil Cassidy of Flat River, Mo.,; Mrs. Flora Brewer of Hayti, Mo.; and Mrs. Jesse Bennett of Urbana, Ill.; two brothers, Parker Cassidy of Catron, Mo. and Leonard Cassidy of Benton Harbor, Mich. Also surviving are four grandchildren.
Burial was in Number Eight Cemetery beside his father. It was mentioned that the lot in which they are buried was the site of the house in which the father was born. German Funeral Home of Steele was in charge.
