Ferris Clark, 25, of Cooter, was drowned last Thursday, May 16, in what is known as the Callihan ditch, a few miles north of the Arkansa-Missouri line in Dunklin county, when the boat in which he and two companions were fishing capsized. One man, Herbert Gilmore, attempted to rescue him, but was unable to bring him to the surface after he had sunk, due to his weight and the heavy clothing he was wearing. His other companion, Wm. Jenkins, was able to swim to shore and save himself, the Blytheville Courier News reports.
Clark was operating the motor in the small fishing boat, which was running low, and the swift current caused it to fill with water and sink. Due to the rain and cold weather all three men were heavily clad.
The young man was born at Cooter March 21, 1921 and lived all his life there. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruby Lawler and two children, Jerry and Merrell. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Clark, live at Matthews, Mo. and four sisters and three brothers also survive. Funeral services were postponed awaiting the arrival of a brother, Arlene, stationed at Camp Kilmer, N.J. in the military service.
