JAMES H. ROBERTSON

Civil War Union Veteran, businessman and honored pioneer citizen of Jasper County, Missouri.
Mr. Robertson was born in Woodstock, Canada on 2 Mar 1848. His father, Robert Robertson was a native of Scotland and was there reared and educated. He was married in his native country to Susanna Hamilton, also of Scotland. After his parents marriage they left Scotland and crossed the Atlantic to Canada, arriving there in 1838. His father was employed as a cabinet maker until 1860. They then moved to the United States, settling in Alton, IL., then removing to Greene county where he then died when about sixty-one years of age.
His wife also passed away at age fifty-six years. Together they were the parents of eleven children. At that time, eight of them were still living. Four sons and four daughters.

James H. Robertson, their fourth child and third son, received a common school education in Canada before coming to the United States with his family in 1860. In 1860 he loyally responded to the call of his adopted country, enlisting in Company K, One hundred and Eighth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. As a private he served with honor and distinction until the close of the war. He participated in a number of hard fought battles [*see war record below], and at the close of the war when his country no longer needed his services he was honorably discharged at Chicago, Illinois in 1865. He then returned home with a creditable military record.
He then located in Macoupin county, Illinois and in 1874 he came to, and located in Jasper County, Missouri. After his arrival in this state he located in the Jasper township, where he remained until 1880. In that year he settled on a farm which he owned and operated. His land was under a high state of cultivation and everything about the place was neat and thrifty in appearance, indicating to the casual passer-by and his neighbors the careful supervision of a progressive owner.

Mr. Robertson was first married in Macoupin County, IL., the then Miss Lucinda Enos. Together they had three children; Fannie (d. age 12 at Iantha, Barton county, MO.), Rosie and Johnnie. On March 31, 1880 Lucinda Enos Robertson passed away and in 1881 he was remarried to Alice Wilson Basore, the widow of George Basore and a native of Illinois.
James Robertson was a staunch Republican, unswerving in his allegiance to the principles of that grand old party, and in its ranks he took a prominent and active part. Although he never sought office, he was called upon by his fellow townsmen to serve as constable and road overseer, and in both offices with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He maintained pleasant relations with his comrades of the blue by his membership in Stephen Decatur Post, G.A.R. No. 142 at Medoc, in which he filled all the offices.
He was a man of strong mentality and of broad humanitarian principles and kind motives. No trust entrusted in him was ever betrayed, and whether on the field of battle protecting the stars and stripes or in his private life, he was true to his adopted country and its best interests,
~a loyal and patriotic citizen.
