Oran Man Drowns While Swimming In Drainage ditch
ORAN, June l--Charles William Horrell, 20, of Oran, was the victim of accidental drowning yesterday afternoon when he apparently stepped into a deep hole in a drainage ditch three miles northwest of Oran.
Horrell and three companions, his brother, Paul Horrell, Joe Eftink, and W.J. Trinkler decided yesterday afternoon they would go swimming in Ditch No. 1. After they had been there only a few minutes, Charles Horrell went under. Despite frantic searching by his excited mates, the body of Horrell could not be found immediately.
A short time later, Junior DeHarte came by the swimming hole and found Horrell.
Mr. Horrell, employed by the Scott County Milling Co., of Sikeston, was born Sept. 18, 1932 at Chaffee. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Pauline Horrell; six sisters, Mrs. George Eftink, of Chaffee, Mrs. Thomas Ackman, of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. Lawrence Eftink, of Oran, and Loretta, Alice, and Martha, of the home; and two brothers, Paul and Theon, of the home.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Guardian Angel Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Poepsel officiating. will be in the Catholic Cemetery with Earl J. Smith service.
