Old Gibson (Defunct) Cemetery

The “Old” Gibson Cemetery is mentioned in a Carthage Press newspaper article first in 1901, then again, March 25, 1922 (sec 4, p 6). Judge John Onstott describes it as “located on what afterward became Dr. Carter’s farm on Center Creek, about a mile east of what is called the High Hill School.” He further states that it is “now obliterated” (1901). Carter’s land was previously owned by William Gibson, from his original land grant in 1847 until his death in 1856 then after his estate. It is in Township 28, Range 31 West, parts of Sections 29, 30 and 31. Present day location would be south of Elm Road and east of County Road 170. The property is now owned by Precious Moments, Inc.
Torrential rains in the summer of 1875 caused massive flooding, destroying farms and crops in Jasper County and surrounding areas. It is most likely the cause of the cemetery being “obliterated.”
The William Gibson family is most likely buried in this destroyed cemetery as exhaustive research has not located members buried anywhere else in Jasper County.
