Ira Lee Newsom

Mr. Ira Lee Newsom, age 93, of Anderson, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Freeman Neosho Hospital in Neosho, MO.

He had lived in Anderson since 1953, coming from Kansas. He was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Centerview, Kan., to the late Ira Thomas and Carrie May (Dimmick) Newsom. He was a self-employed plumber. He loved to fish, enjoyed woodworking and was a Protestant. He loved to watch his great-grandson play Little League baseball, and for the last two years he was the sponsor of their team.

He married Geneva Chrisman on May 27, 1934, at Lewis, Kan. She preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John, Ralph and Charlie.

Survivors include his two daughters, Elaine Hunt of Overland Park, Kan., and Carol Strickland of Anderson; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Walker-Dowd Funeral Home in Anderson. The Reverend Jarvis Spears will officiate. Burial will follow service at the Banner Cemetery in Anderson.

Great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Shawn Martin, Philip Black, Jason Strickland, Jeff Strickland, Josh Strickland, Jeremy Strickland, Nick Marshall and Mike Marshall. Grant Strickland will serve as honorary pallbearer.
