Infection Is Fatal to Child.
An infection which resulted from a puncture of the toe by a nail caused the tragic death, Friday o last week, of little Bessie Marie Reed, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reed, of near Appleton City.
Bessie Marie died in the Mercy hospital in Kansas City. She was treated at the Ellett hospital here until Tuesday of last week when her condition became serious and she was taken to Kansas City.
The infection was apparently begun when Bessie Marie stepped on a nail at her parents farm, October 7.
Besides her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Ernest Leroy Reed and Joe Jimmy Reed, both of the home; her paternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Reed, of near Appleton City; and her maternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Medearis, of Amoret, formerly of Appleton City.
Bessie Marie was born August 2, 1937, at Appleton City, and died October 17, 1941, at the age of four years, two months and 15 days.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October 19, at the First Baptist church in Appleton City, before a crowd which taxed the capacity of the building. The services were conducted by Rev. E.N. Webb, pastor of the church.
Burial was made in Appleton City cemetery. Pall bearers were Quinton Brown, Glen Merryfield, Junior Brown and Kenneth Bailey.
The Journal joins the entire community in expressions of sympathy for the bereaved family.
