Lee's Summit was originally named Strother but the people of the town changed it to Lea's Summit in his honor. The spelling got changed over time by railroad sign painters and confusion with General Robert E. Lee. Dr. Lea was the town physician. In 1862 he had his family moved back to Tennessee because of the violence during the Civil War. Dr Lea was tortured and murdered in 1862 by the Kansas Jayhawkers or Red Legs. He also had his home burned along with others.
