Parents: James and Mary Given Campbell
Given Campbell was a lawyer from Saint Louis, Mo. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army, was commissioned a captain, and served with Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry. By the end of the war, he was given charge of Jefferson Davis's personal escort. Participated in various Civil War campaigns and battles, including Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern) and Chickamauga. Many of the letters discuss politics and the military situation in the South, particularly in Kentucky and Missouri, during the early days of the war.
