Gladden Gorin Hughlett was born in Robertson County, Tenn., near Cross Plains, June 22, 1826, and is the son of Toliver and Frances (Gorin) Hughlett and grandson of James Hughlett. His maternal grandfather was Gladden Gorin, both families being descendants of early Virginia settlers. Of the ten children born to Tolliver and Frances Hughlett, Gladden Gorin Hughlett is one. He grew to manhood in Tennessee, and in 1850 came to Missouri, where he spent four years, engaged in tilling the soil in St. Clair County. In 1854 he went to Polk County, Mo., where he followed agricultural pursuits, and was there united in marriage with Miss Frances Hayden, a daughter of Leonard G. and Sarah (McCracken) Hayden, natives of North Carolina. After spending one year in Texas Mr. Hughlett moved to Newton County and located in Newtonia Township, where he has since remained. To his marriage were born three sons and two daughters: Elmira (wife of William Williams), Henry C. (in Carroll County, Ark.), Amanda Lee (wife of W. S. Granger), James L. and John S. Mr. Hughlett has a good farm of eighty acres, and is doing well.
