Stephen Welcome Wolcott, a respected and one of the oldest citizens of Newton county died at his home in this place at 9 o'clock last Monday evening, May 23d, 1892, at the advanced age of eighty one. Mr. Wolcott received a severe injury by falling from a house he was shingling in Granby about four years ago, from which hurt he never fully recovered.
He was born in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, on February 3d, 1811, and came to Missouri in 1837. He was married to Mary Jane Gibson on December 24th, 1848, at Neosho, Thomas Dawson a magistrate, performing the ceremony.
Mr. Wolcott was probably about the oldest Mason in Newton county, having been a charter member of the Newton Lodge. He came to St. Louis when he was at the age of twenty one and brought the first spirit level that was ever in St. Louis.
He built the court house in Mt. Vernon in 1856. He has held many different county offices. He held the place of county surveyor at one time, and served a term as circuit clerk of Newton county. He was postmaster at Newtonia just after the war and was justice of the peace many years.
He leaves a wife and the following sons and daughters: G. W. Wolcott of Ritchey, Frank Wolcott of Endicott, Washington, Charles and John Wolcott of Granby, Mrs. Frank Grimes of near Neosho and James and Miss Urania Wolcott, who are at home with their mother.
The remains were taken to the college yard, on yesterday, where funeral services, conducted by Rev. T. L. Largen and Rev. Wainright were held, after which the Masonic order took charge of the remains, which were interred in the Newtonia cemetery. All of Mr. Wolcott's family were present at the funeral services excepting Frank Wolcott.
One by one the old citizens pass away, and Mr. Wolcott's familiar and kind face will be sadly missed in this community. The bereaved have the heart felt sympathy of all.
