Funeral services were conduced Sunday afternoon for Elmer Cantrell of near Risco, at the Steele Baptist Church, who died Friday at a Poplar Bluff hospital. Burial was made in the Lester Cemetery.
Elmer Cantrell, son of Walter and Ethel Lester Cantrell, was born August 28, 1911 and passed away at Brandon Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo., on February 12, 1943 at the age of 31 years, 5 months and 13 days.
For eight years he was a member of Company A of the 140th Infantry, Missouri National Guard.
His half-brother, Connie Gene Battles, was captured by the Japanese the day after Pearl Harbor, and is now in a Japanese prison camp in China.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Chism, of Risco; two sisters, Pauline Chism and Maxine Chism; five brothers, James L. Chism, Willie Chism, Max L. Chism, and J.P. Battles, all of Risco, and Connie Gene in China. In addition to his family he has a number of relatives and acquaintances in and around Steele.
As he was passing away he sang a religious song.
