One of Steele's best known merchants died July 12, 1961 at his home in Steele after a long illness. Mr. Nagib E. Koury died at age 72, having lived in Steele since 1927.
A merchant most of his life, Mr. Koury was active in business in the Firestone Store until illness forced him to remain at home.
Mr. Koury was born in 1889 in Batagrine, Lebanon. He came to America at the age of 15, moving to Steele from Cairo, Ill.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church, Caruthersville and of the A.F.&A.M. Lodge. He was a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason.
Services were held July 14, in Caruthersville at the Episcopal Church, the pastor, Rev. James D'Wolf officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery, German Fuenral Home in charge.
Masonic service was held at the graveside.
Survivors are a son, Phillip Koury and a daughter, Miss Olga Koury, both of Steele; two sisters, Mrs. L. Simmons, Herrin, Ill., and Mrs. Adele Saliba of Beirut, Lebanon.
Pallbearers were W. A. Oates, Sims Michie, H. L. Yeager, David Kelley, Bert Poteet, and Frank Huffman.
