Son of Mert L. & Wilma
Mert Junior Hood, 75, son of Mert L. and Wilma Miller Hood, was born Jan. 6, 1927, at Colton, Calif. He died Nov. 22, 2002, at his home following a battle with cancer.
He spent his childhood years in Missouri and California. He graduated from Colton High School at age 16 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 1, 1944. He was a radioman third class on the LST 994 in the Philippines and during the occupation of Japan.
He married Beulah Faye Rust March 23, 1951. They had three children and nine grandchildren.
Mr. Hood ran a milk route and worked for area service stations. He spent several years with the Cabool Shoe Factory. He began a career in grocery management, working first at Farmers Grocery in Cabool and for Town 'n' Country in Mountain Grove.
He was involved in the junior chamber of commerce for many years and was active in community affairs. He was a committed Boy Scout leader, who taught a love and respect for the outdoors along with practical skills. He enjoyed meeting and working with people of all ages.
Mr. Hood accepted Christ at a young age and served as Shady Grove Sunday School superintendent. He also attended the Cabool Christian Church. He was active in the Shady Grove Community Club, helping his friends and neighbors. He enjoyed the food, fun and fellowship in that close community.
He was an avid outdoors man, enjoying games and sports as a spectator and competitor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty Hardy.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years; his children, Mike Hood of Columbia, Jerry Hood of Cabool and Peggy Spieckermann of Joplin; one sister, Pauline King of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; two brothers, Emmett Hood of Jefferson City and Rick Hood of Springfield; and nine grandchildren.
Services were Nov. 27 at the Cabool Christian Church with Bob Martin and Eldon Coffman officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Cabool Athletic Booster Club and Community Hospice.
