Jewell Lucille Byrd Stark, 84, daughter of John and Alta Brown Byrd, was born Dec. 8, 1915, near Solo. She died Nov. 15, 2000, at Kabul Nursing Home.
She married Herschel Ray Stark Sept. 3, 1938. They had three children and lived in the Cabool area.
Mrs. Stark was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cabool
During the '50s, Mrs. Stark helped her husband with their used furniture store on Main Street. After selling the store, she baby-sat for many youngsters at Cabool and was lovingly called "Mama Jewell".
In the days before police radios, Mrs. Stark was the unofficial dispatcher for her police chief husband. Many times she would get in her car and drive to find him.
After raising her children, she worked for 13 years in the dietary department at Kabul Nursing Home.
After retirement, the Starks traveled to Canada and many states, camping and fishing for white bass with friends.
Mrs. Stark was a supporter of the Cabool Senior Center, where she enjoyed playing pinochle, eating lunch and visiting with friends. Her favorite times were spent telling cute stories, showing pictures, playing and laughing with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Dean Stark; two brothers, Morgan and Edgar; and one sister, Marie Unger.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Ronnie Ray of Cabool; one daughter, Patricia Ann Parker of Cabool; one sister, Thelma Nelle Ramsey of Licking; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Nov. 16 at the Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darel Loughridge officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery. (Houston Herald Online Obituary Archives)
