The novel Lucy Winchester by Christmas Carol Kauffman is based on the life of Bessie Viola Woodyard who insisted to the author that she use pseudonyms for the characters. The novel was written in 1969 and published by Herald Press of Scottsdale, PA. It is a Christian-based book that examines Bessie's life on the postbellum frontier, a hard time for both her birth family and for her married family: a stern father, an alcoholic husband, children who died. It is a book about a woman's faith to continue and to endure with the love of God and belief in Christ.
