Funeral services for Nancy E. Wheat, 90, West Plains, were Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Wheat died at 3:35 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in Ozarks Medical Center. She was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Howell County, Mo., to William Enoch and Laura (Ella) Hopkins Ledbetter. On Sept. 15, 1938, she was married in Howell County, Mo., to Lowell Wheat; they spent more than 60 years in marriage before he preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1999. Mrs. Wheat spent many years as a homemaker and cook, having worked at the YACC Camps and the Pomona and Ridgeview Schools. She helped Lowell on the family farm and raising six children. Her hobbies included quilting and embroidery. She loved to spend time with her very large family and cooking for them. Mrs. Wheat was baptized at the age of 15; she continued to worship in her Baptist faith until her death. She is survived by six children, Lowena Swearingen, husband, Jim, of West Plains, Joe Wheat, wife, Sonja, of Willow Springs, Mo., Bonnie Sanders of West Plains, Dennis Wheat, wife, Carolyn, of Carlsbad, N.M., Donald Wheat, wife, Judi, of Pomona, Mo., and Dallas Wheat, wife, Patty, of Benbrook, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Ledbetter, wife, Verlin, of West Plains and Marion Ledbetter, wife, Fern, of Pomona, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her parents; husband; one infant grandson; one daughter-in-law, Kay Wheat; two sisters, Fern Ledbetter and Betty Romans; and three brothers, Othel Ledbetter, Wayne Ledbetter and Homer Ledbetter, precede her in death. Burial was at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Riverways Hospice and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
