Obituary
Died: At 6 o’clock Thursday morning Jan. 27, 1898, at his home in Pineville, Mo., James C. Hooper, aged 73 years, 3 months, and 2 days, after a long and painful illness of more than a year with dropsy.
Col. J. C. Hooper was born in Jackson county, Ala., on Oct. 25, 1824, where he grew to manhood. When war was declared between the United States and Mexico, he answered the call for troops and served his country until the close of the war in 1818, when he returned to Alabama with his regiment and in 1849 was married to Miss L. H. Spurgin. In 1851 they moved to Dade Co., Mo., where they resided for many years. In 1859 Col. Hooper went to California, returning to his family just as the war broke out. He espoused the cause of the south and in June 1861, entered the Confederate army. For bravery in battle he was successively promoted on the field of from the ranks through all the grades until he became Colonel of the regiment known to the Confederates as “Hooper’s Regiment of Jo O. Shelby’s Brigade.” When the god of war ruled against him and the cause he espoused, he laid down his arms and returned allegiance to the Stars and Stripes and no man on either side could have been more loyal to the United States than he. At the close of the war he took his family and went to Tennessee, resuming his pursuit of farming, remaining there four years, then going to Arkansas, from which state he returned to Missouri in 1885, settling in McDonald County where the remainder of his life was spent, a loved, honored and highly respected citizen, neighbor and Christian gentleman.
Col. Hooper was the father of four children, two boys and two girls, viz: Mont Hooper of Leslie, Arkansas; Mrs. Addie Sears, Orchard, Arkansas; Britt and Mollie Hooper of Pineville. He was an upright and consistent member of the Christian church, and died peacefully and quietly, strong in the faith, and feeling that he had lived honorably and consistently. His loss is mourned and his memory revered by all who knew him. A brave man, an honored citizen, a kind, loving husband and father, and a true Christian has gone to his reward.
