On September 3, 1889, a young man named Barney McBreen became the first of 77 Kansas City firefighters to have died in the line of service. While drilling with a pompier ladder at a commercial building, he was killed when he fell eight stories. He was the first member of the department to make The Supreme Sacrifice.
