William Oliver Garrett died serving the Union 39th Infantry Volunteers Company B in the Civil War at a Macon Hospital from a tree falling on him at the blockade in Mexico, MO. According to his daughter Julia in a 1931 Kirksville Daily Express news article William Garrett was the Constable of Kirksville at one time.
