Virgil Leon Akers, 69, Cabool, passed away on March 1, 2009 at the St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, MO following a long and difficult illness. He was born on Oct. 6, 1939 at the home of his parents, Virgil Granville and Ethel Ruth (Mulkey) Akers in rural Norwood, MO in Douglas County. He was the seventh oldest of eight boys and one girl. He lived most of his life in the Cabool area.
Leon worked with his father as a mason, building brick and block structures, 13 years at Smith Flooring and 31 years as a foreman at Arkansas Electric from which he retired in 2005.
On June 23, 1973 he was united in marriage to Gloria Jean Bertram in Cabool, where they resided with their two children, Angela Lyn and Tony Bennett.
Leon was a hard worker and he loved to fish and hunt. He took great pride in nursing and growing a garden each year and was known for his giant sunflowers. He never let his health interfere with the thing he enjoyed doing. When he was able to get out, he enjoyed his many coffee shop outings, eating out with family and attending church. The joy of his life was his family, especially his six granddaughters, one grandson and three great grandsons.
Leon was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor who will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph, Morris, Granville "Bud", John, Kenneth and Wallace; and a niece, Debbie Akers.
He is survived by his loving wife and partner of almost 36 years, Gloria of their home; his daughter, Angie Mead and husband, John of Aurora; his son, Tony Bennett and wife, Nikki of Cabool; one sister, Carol Freeman of Belton, MO; one brother, Russell Akers and wife, Kay of Boise, Idaho; six granddaughters, Stephanie Sigman and fiancé, Bryce Trotter of Springfield, Nikki Wake and husband, Roger of Cabool, Samantha Sigman of Republic, Randi Lyn Sigman of Springfield, Madison and Meagan Bennett of Cabool and Joel Mead of Aurora; three great grandsons, Aiden Sigman of Republic and Daeton and Gavin Wake of Cabool; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He will be dearly missed and always loved.
