The cemetery at Quarantine Island consisted of the 56th US Colored Infantry from Arkansas who died of Cholera in 1866. The unit was enroute to St Louis from Helena Ar to muster out of service when many of the men became ill during the journey. The total of deaths are reported to 175. In 1939 the graves were moved to Jefferson Barracks and buried in a mass grave.
Quarantine Island should not be confused with Small Pox Island. Waagner’s map of St Louis County, MO from 1857 shows several island which no longer exist due to flooding and city growth which caused the water levels to rise.
