Ray Sherrill passed away from natural causes Tuesday, March 17, 2015 while at Christian Health Care in Lebanon, MO at the age of 94 years, 6 months, 16 days.
Johnnie Ray Sherrill was born September 1, 1920 in Nagle, MO to Charles Walter and Ella Elaine (Masters) Sherrill. Ray spent his early years in Nagle growing up on the family farm. He graduated from high school in Summersville, MO. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served his Country during World War II for 3 years as an automotive mechanic. During that time, he was stationed in such places as England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.
Ray and Mary Lawrence O'Kelly were married May 25, 1944. They started their family in Willow Springs, moved to Wichita, KS for a few years, and eventually settled down back in Willow Springs. Ray had several service stations before becoming a petroleum distributor for MFA. He retired from MFA in 1982. During retirement, Ray enjoyed spending his time playing golf, hunting, fishing, and traveling with his wife. Ray was a long time member of Trinity Baptist Church in Willow Springs, the VFW, and the Willow Springs Masonic Lodge. On September 13, 2011, Ray was privileged and honored to be on one of the Ozarks Honor Flights to Washington, DC to visit the WWII Memorial, something he was very proud of. He will be greatly missed by his family and those who knew him.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Arthur; his sister, Velma Houston, and his wife Mary in 2004.
Ray is survived by his four children Marilyn Cummins and her husband Glen of Lebanon, MO; Carolyn Sorrells and her husband Gary of Monett, MO;
Jim Sherrill of Palm Springs, CA; and Becky Bonacker and her husband Bob of Lee's Summit, MO. He is also survived by his sister, Lucille Cox of Willow Springs.
He is further survived by his grandchildren Chris Mackey and his wife, Andrea of Jonesboro, AR; Carrie Hammond and her husband Billy of Lebanon, MO; Gary Sorrells, Jr. of Ponce, Puerto Rico; Kelley McCaffrey and her husband Joe of Monett, MO; and Michael Sherrill of Modesto, CA. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren; Alex Johnson and her husband Ahmad, Erin, Abby, Trinity, Mitchell, Maddox and Mason as well as several cousins and close friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Sherrill will be held Friday, March 20th at 2:00pm, at the Willow Funeral Home, located at 106 E. Third Street in Willow Springs with Pastor Ed Hamilton officiating. A visitation will be held Friday from 1pm - 2pm prior to the commencement of the funeral service. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Willow Springs City Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus, the American Lung Assn., or the charity of your choice in Ray's name. Arrangements are under the direction of Willow Funeral Home.
