Charles H. Markey was born in Frederick City, Maryland, March 11, 1847, died in Kirksville, Mo., Wednesday Dec. 5, 1900 at 11 o'clock p.m., aged 53 years, 8 months and 24 days. When about five years old he removed from Frederick City, Md. with his parents to Iowa, from thence to Adair County, Missouri, in the year ____ where he had ever since resided except seven years near Clay Center, Kansas. He was twice married. First to Miss Adaline Koontz, who died in the year 1884. To them were born three children; Mae, Annie and Etta. Mae died a few years ago in this county. Annie lives with her husband on a homestead in Oklahoma. Etta, until a few months ago, made her home with her maternal grandmother, but on the death of her grandmother, came to live with her father and was present at his death. His second marriage was to Miss Elizabeth Page of this city June 10, 1886, who tenderly cared for him during his many long years of helplessness and suffering.

Mr. Markey enlisted in the Union Army Feb. 25, 1874, when less than 17 years old, in Co. F. 12th Mo. Cav. and served until the end of the war when he was went [sic] to the frontier and served until April 19, 1867. A cavalry-man's service is hard enough during war, but he saw much harder service on the frontier fighting the Indians. At one time he was cut off from the main army for 35 days, during which time they had no rations and subsisted on raw mule meat and such herbs and wild fruit as they could find.

His untimely death was hastened by disease contracted in his army service. He has been a helpless, hopeless invalid for the past 12 years and could only get around on a wheeled chair.

He united with the Presbyterian church of this city June 13, 1886, and lived a consistent member until his death. He formerly had been a member of the M.E. church.

His funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.A. Smith and on the afternoon of Dec. 7th, 1900, he was laid to rest in Forest Park cemetery, this city. His remains was followed to the grave by many friends including his late comrades of Corporal Dix Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
