Barney Davis

Death called one of Republic’s prominent pioneers at 1:40 o’clock last Wednesday afternoon in St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, when B. W. (Uncle Barney) Davis, 88, succumbed to a heart condition and infirmities of advanced years. The deceased was a native of this community. He was born on a farm in the Wise Hill District, south of this city, and spent his entire life in the vicinity of his birth. He operated a farm southeast of Republic for many years and reared his family there. Upon his retirement about 45 years ago he and his family came to this city and have since made their home on East Elm Street here. A former mayor of Republic, “Uncle Barney”, as he was known to his many friends, was a man of strong convictions and courage. He was a devout member of the Church of Christ here and had served as an elder in the church since its founding being a charter member. After moving here he did carpenter work and painting. He possessed considerable musical talent and was considered one of the area’s best old-time fiddlers. He loved the hymns of the church and enjoyed singing them very much. He was held in highest esteem by his many friends. Survivors include his widow of the home; one son, Walter Davis of Ontario, Cal., who is visiting here; six daughters, Mrs. Emmett Grey of rural Billings, Mrs. Betty Newcomb of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Hubert Edwards of Springfield, Mrs. Oren Adams of Fullerton, Cal., and Mrs. Russell Bassore of Mt. Vernon, and Miss Tressie Davis of the home; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and other relatives and hosts of friends. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon in the Church of Christ on East Grand Street here with the pastor, Jesse Weatherwax, officiating. Burial will be in the Wise Hill Cemetery, south of Republic, under direction of Harris of Clever. Charles Henry, Albert and Fred David and Leonard and Boyd Fugitt will serve as pallbearers.

NOTE: This clipping from the collection of Lula (Rogers) Gardner has a handwritten date of 31 May 1956 in the margin.
