DEATH OF PROF. J.T. PADEN

After a very short but severe sickness Prof. J.T. Paden, of the State Normal, died in this city on Saturday last, August 16th. The disease, which was congestion of the bowels, was so sudden and fatal in its work that but few in the community were even aware of his illness. On Tuesday he was able to be about, and though at no time in very robust health there were no indications that he might not be spared for many years of active usefulness in his profession. Prof. Paden was born in the State of Georgia, near Atlanta, June 6th, 1848. He was a self-made, and to a large extent a self-educated man.

Before coming to this place he had taught acceptably at the Warrensburg Normal for two years, continuing his own studies at the same time. He took a position in the Kirksville Normal in 1879 which place he has filled ever since; he was a consistent and and [sic] devoted member of the Christian Church and took an active part in the services and in the Sunday School work of the church. The deceased leaves one sister and three half sisters, the first of whom resides in Bates Co., and was present with her husband, at the funeral. The funeral service which took place from the Christian church on Tuesday forenoon, of this week, was largely attended by our leading citizens, and a vast concourse followed the remains to their last resting place in our cemetery. The services at the church and the grave were conducted [by] Elders Davis and Northcutt.
