Miss Mary E. Spencer, a resident of Kirksville for 55 years died Sunday morning at the age of 79 years. She was the eldest daughter of John J. and Mary Spencer and was born at Prompton, Penn. The family came to Kirksville in 1869. Miss Mary attended the Normal school founded by Prof. Joseph Baldwin, and afterward taught in the public schools of Kirksville for many years and was one of the most popular and efficient teachers in the system. For the past fifteen years Miss Spencer has made her home with her niece, Mrs. Earl Laughlin in this city. She was a member of the Epiecopal [sic] church. Surviving relatives are two nieces and two nephews: Mrs. Earl Laughlin of this city, Mrs. Mary Oakley of Scranton, Pa.; Charles S. Gardner, Montrose, Pa., and Dr. John J. Spencer of Savanah, Mo. Dr. Spencer is here. The funeral services were held at the home of her niece Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial in Llewellyn cemetery.
