MISS BESSIE GRAVES DIES IN CALIFORNIA
Body of Former Postal Employe Will Be Brought Here
Miss Bessie Graves died yesterday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock in Pasadena, California, according to a message received here. The body is being brought to Kirksville for burial, but funeral arrangements had not been made this morning.
Miss Graves, who would have been 51 years old in April, had been in ill health for several years and with her sister, Miss Lottie Graves, went to California last fall in the hope of benefitting her health. Her condition did not improve however, and she gradually became worse. While it was known that she could not recover, the news of her death came as a shock inasmuch as friends here had received a few lines from her yesterday.
Miss Graves was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Graves, an early settler in Kirksville, who was a merchant here for several years and served as postmaster during the Wilson administration. Miss Graves was a clerk in the postoffice during her father's administration, and because of her capability and pleasant manner she was retained as a clerk after the death of her father (who died while in office). Although at times she suffered greatly, she continued at her work until a short time before going to California. She had spent practically all of her life in Kirksville and was a graduate of the Kirksville Teachers College. Those who knew her in her girlhood days say she was an exceptionally popular young woman. She had the faculty of making friends and she had a wide circle of acquaintances.
Miss Graves leaves three sisters, Mrs. Frank Mason, of Pasadena, Miss Lottie Graves and Mrs. Kate Gibbs, of Kirksville, all of whom were with her at the time of her death.
Friends here extend sympathy to the family in the hour of their sorrow.
