"Death of John Thornton
In the death of John Thornton, which occurred at 11:30 o'clock on Monday, at the old homestead near this place, of heart disease, Peno township has lost one of its most upright citizens; his family a devoted husband, son and brother; his church a true and steadfast member. He was a good neighbor, and never refused to grant a favor or accommodate a friend if it was in his power to do so, regardless of his own convenience or comfort.
John Thornton was born in Peno township Feb. 28th, 1834, and hence was 56 years, 2 months and 21 days old at the time of his death. He united with the Christian church at Frankford in 1854, and was baptized by Eld. Timothy Ford. He was united with his now bereaved wife in Johnson county, Mo., Nov. 20th, 1879. The funeral services were held at the Christian church on Tuesday, at 3 p.m., Eld. J. B. Corwine, of New London, preaching a very fine sermon, after which the remains were conveyed to the Frankford cemetery and there laid to rest in the presence of a large circle of mourning relatives and friends."
