REV. J. H. POLAND TO BE BURIED HERE TUESDAY MORNING

Was One of Best Known Methodist Ministers in Missouri.

The body of the Rev. J. H. Poland, D. D., who died at Cedar Falls, Ia., Friday morning will arrive in Kirksville this evening and will be taken to the Methodist Episcopal Church. The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church, corner High and McPherson streets, Tuesday morning at ten thirty.

Dr. Poland was one of the most influential and successful ministers the Methodist church of North Missouri has ever produced. He was born and grew up in Ohio, coming to Missouri when he was seventeen years of age. He was educated in the common schools of Ohio and Missouri, receiving his technical training in Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. He entered the ministry of the Methodist church forty years ago this spring, being at different times pastor at Albany, Stanberry, Brookfield, Cameron, First Church Hannibal and Moberly.

In 1891 he was appointed presiding elder of the Kirksville District, serving a full term of six years; after which he was appointed pastor at Cameron. After a fruitful pastorate at Cameron he was again appointed presiding elder, this time for the Hannibal District, making his headquarters at Macon Cty. After four years on this district he was transferred to the Cameron District where he served in the eldership for another full term of six years. When the legal time limit was up he was transferred again to the Kirksville District, where after one year of service he broke down and retired into the superannuate ranks.

Seventeen of his forty years of ministry was in the honorable office of presiding elder, and perhaps this, more than any one thing, places the stamp of the church's true appreciation of the man. He was a fearless preacher, a wise administrator and a brotherly man; A Prince of God.

The service will be attended by a considerable number of the pastors of the Missouri Conference. It will be in charge of Dr. Ben F. Jones and Rev. William F. Burris, D. D., District Superintendent of the Cameron District.
