Evergreen Cemetery
Stone County,
Missouri

Description:
After you’ve seen The Shepherd of the Hills outdoor drama and gotten to know the characters who formed the basis for Harold Bell Wright’s wildly famous novel The Shepherd of the Hills, you can visit their final resting places at the Shepherd of the Hills Historical Evergreen Cemetery. A small sign just west of Indian Point Road on MO 76 marks the entrance to the cemetery. If you get to the intersection of MO 265, you’ve gone too far. You’ll see the graves of J. K. and Anna Ross (Uncle Matt and Aunt Mollie), Levi Morrill (Uncle Ike), and his wife, Jennie, and Truman Powell (the Old Shepherd). Morrill donated the land for the cemetery in 1894, and a memorial stone was erected in 1925 in memory of these legendary Ozarkians, whose mark on the area remains alive and well today. In an appropriately tree-shaded portion of the cemetery at the easternmost corner lies a granite stone bearing the names of Mary R. (1899–1983) and Hugo Herschend (1899–1955), founders of Silver Dollar City.
