James S. German, 79, of Steele died yesterday (Thursday) morning at Walls hospital in Blytheville of a stomach ailment. He entered the hospital Sunday.
Mr. German moved to Steele sixty years ago from Tennessee, where he was born on June 2, 1860. During a long and busy life in this county he was instrumental in the founding of schools in Steele and was one of the founders of the Methodist church there. He had been both a member of the School Board and a member of the Board of Deacons in the church, and he also was a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge.
Mr. German married Mrs. Modena Manning Scott when he was 25 years old. He and his wife celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last year.
Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon from the Steele Methodist Church, with the Rev. H.S. Holley in charge, assisted by other ministers of Steele. Interment will be in Mt. Zion cemetery.
Surviving Mr. German are his wife, a son, J.L. German, a daughter, Mrs. T.I. Brooks, and a sister, Mrs. Nancy Gunn, all of Steele, and a brother, Ike German of Rector, Ark.
It is remarked that this is the fourth death in the German family in the past eighteen months. Two sons of the deceased, John and Edgar, died and also the latter's wife, Mrs. Edgar German, within that period.

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. J.S. German, who died Sunday night after several days' illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.L. Brooks, with whom she had made her home since the death of her husband on Aug. 3, 1939. The services were held at the Methodist church in Steele at 2:30 by the pastor, Rev. H.S. Holley, assisted by Rev. J.W. Cunningham and Elder Thomas C. Whitfield. Interment was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
Mrs. German would have been 73 years of age today (Friday). She was born in Mississippi, her maiden name being Modena Manning, and she came to Steele when a small child and long before the town was founded. She was first married to a Mr. Scott and to them was born one daughter, Mrs. Brooks. After his death she married Mr. German and they had several children, all except one of whom, J.L. German, have preceded her in death. She was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Royal Neighbors Lodge for a number of years.
