ANOTHER VETERAN IS GONE

-JAMES SALING OF NOVELTY DIES SUDDENLY LAST THURSDAY
James Saling of Novelty passed away suddenly at his home last Thursday morning, Mar. 2. He had been somewhat feeble for some time, but apparently was in usual health and was about town the day before. When he awoke Thursday morning he seemed alright, but later he complained of a pain in his head. Medical aid was called, but to no avail, and in a few minutes he had passed away.
Mr. Saling was born in Knox County, Mar. 13, 1842, making him 73 years, 11 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He was married to Elizabeth J. Aucutt and four children were born to them. One son preceded him in death. He leaves his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Ida Bowers of Syracuse, Kansas; two sons, J.W. Saling of Nekoma, Kansas, and J.F. Saling, whose home is with his mother; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was from a family of twelve children. A sister, Mrs. Mary Cupp of La Plata, is the only one living.
Mr. Saling answered the call of the state of Missouri and enlisted in the service of his country in the state troops in August 1864. He volunteered to the national service and after a few months of faithful service was mustered out to return to the old home southwest of Novelty, where he lived about 32 years ago, when he moved with his family to Novelty.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Christian Church at Novelty and the body was laid to rest in the New Harmony Cemetery by the side of his son. Mr. Saling united with the Christian Church in 1872.
