Ira I. Saling, son of James and Elizabeth Saling, was born in Knox County, July 22, 1871. He moved from the home of his childhood with his parents to this town in November 1902, and soon thereafter became disabled for manual labor, because of lung trouble, which disease finally triumphed, and he fell victim on Feb. 10, aged 32 years, 6 months and 18 days.
Some months before death he became deeply concerned about his soul's destiny. We read to him plain statement of our Lord concerning the life eternal, and he seemed to grasp the truth as applicable to himself. After our first visit and up to his death, he appreciated the reading of the scripture and prayer. He expressed himself as not possessing the light he desired, but was willing to trust it in God.
He penned a few lines to his twin sister in Kansas, biding her goodbye and asking her to meet him in Heaven. His funeral was held at the home and the remains were borne to New Harmony for burial. He leaves a father and mother, one sister, and two brothers to mourn their loss.
