J.W. Blackwell, 89, of South Fulton, TN, formerly of Steele, died May 20, 2001 at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN.
Born March 28, 1912, in Newbern, TN, he was the son of the late Villis Lyth and Clara Bell Smith Blackwell. He was raised and educated in Steele before moving to Obion Co., TN. in 1956. He was a WWII Army Veteran, a retired farmer in Obion Co., a member of the Smith Street Church of Christ, and a poet. He served as toastmaster of Steele School reunions from his graduation until 1999. He was united in marriage to Lois Dildine on Oct. 21, 1957 at East Prairie.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Blackwell; two sons, V.L. Blackwell of South Fulton, and John Blackwell of Martin, TN; two daughters, Merriel Kunz of Mount Green, UT, and Mona Riveria of Albuquerque, NM; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Steele, with Mr. Miles Mayo and Rev. John Blackwell officiating.
Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Steele.
Pallbearers were Barry Blackwell, Andy Blackwell, Chad Montgomery, Mike Holman, Mike Brundige and Mark Phelps.
Honorary pallbearers were Larry Campbell, Jakin McCullar, O.G. Hitchens, Van Kight, Fred Kight, Robert Holman and Jim Petty.
John W. German Funeral Home of Steele, MO, was in charge of the services.
