Funeral services for Russell Thompson, 83, of West Plains, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, in the Rose Chapel at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Thompson died at 10:14 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Ozarks Medical Center. He was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Thomasville, Mo., to Robert Martin and Alma Nettie Fisher Thompson. He graduated from the Thomasville High School and attended the School of Banking in Lincoln, Neb. On Aug. 17, 1946, he was married at Hardy, Ark., to Helen M. McCrackin. Mr. Thompson was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as the Howell County clerk from 1962 to 1970, was employed at the West Plains Bank from 1970 to 1982 as senior vice president and was the president of Missouri Southern Bank from 1984 until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Thompson was a 33rd degree Mason, was a 50-year member of the Mt. Zion Lodge A.F. & A.M. #327, member of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine AAONMS, Springfield, Mo., and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Missouri Angus Association, the National Angus Association and was an active member of the Gideon's for 15 years. Mr. Thompson was a member of the First Christian Church for more than 50 years, having served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the board, elder and deacon. He loved working with his cattle and farming, but his first love was his God and family. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Helen Thompson, of the family home; two sons, Gale R. Thompson and his wife, Tanga, of West Plains, Mo., and Thomas N. Thompson and his wife, June, of Chestnutridge, Mo.; grandchildren, Carrie Womack and her husband, Scott, Justin Thompson and his wife, Kris, Christopher "Buck" Thompson and his wife, BillieJean, Carla Procter, Greg Garrison and Shonda Garrison; great-grandchildren, Sam Womack, Jacob Womack, Toren Thompson, Tristan Thompson, Dally Jean Thompson and Casey Jane Thompson; one sister, Hazel Bradley of Peace Valley, Mo.; brother-in-law, Lucky Miles of Springfield, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Ethel Barton of Peace Valley, Melba McCracken and Wanita McCracken of West Plains, Mo.; and Oleta Summers and her husband, Jim, of Marshfield, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, two brothers, Robert Martin "Babe" Thompson and Bernard Thompson and three sisters, Mary Ann, Marie and Maxine, precede him in death. Masonic rites were delivered by the Mt. Zion Lodge A.F. & A.M. #327 at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon Bible Society or First Christian Church and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
