ALPHUS C. HERNDON
Alphus C. Herndon, 82, of 837 W. Atlantic, was dead on arrival at 12:21 p.m. Saturday at Cox Medical Center following an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Herndon, formerly of Lebanon, moved to Springfield three months ago. A World War I veteran, he retired from Contractors Machinery Co., Kansas City, in 1956.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; four sons, Lewis of Raytown, Robert, of the home, Cecil and Bernie, both of Kansas City; two daughters, Mrs. Carmen Maddox, Harrisonville, and Mrs. Carolyn Burk, Kansas City; a sister, Mrs. Mary Eagleburger, 1303 Thoman; 33 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be announced by Ayre-Goodwin.

Edna Ruth Herndon, 90, Springfield, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1993, in Cox Medical Center North.

Mrs. Herndon, a homemaker, was born March 15, 1903, in Greene County, Mo., the daughter of Nathan S. Fields and Arminta Bell Fields. She was united in marriage on March 21, 1921, in Springfield, to Alphus Chester Herndon, who preceded her in death in 1977. She was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, Springfield, and enjoyed cooking, gardening and the country life.

She is survived by four sons, Lewis Herndon, Raytown, Cecil Herndon, Holden, and Robert and Bernie Herndon, both of Springfield; a daughter, Carolyn Roe, Springfield; five sisters, Ida Helms, Dorothy Perkins, Susie Decker, Stella Freeman and Willy Freeman, all of Springfield; 28 grandchil-
dren; 40 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Ayre-Goodwin-Lee, a Heritage Funeral Home at Rivermonte with Chris Upchurch officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
