Mrs. T. J. Littleton

Mrs. T. J. Littleton died at her home 5 miles northeast of Leonard, Mo., March 26, 1918, at 1:20 o'clock. On Jan. 11, 1916, she was stricken with paralysis and had been an invalid since then, much of the time in great pain and distress. During the last two winters her sister, Mrs. Cora McKenny, stayed with them and helped Mr. Littleton to take care of her. She was so grateful for their care and thanked them at the last.

She was a daughter of Silas and Mahala Herlbert, pioneer residents of Knox county, Mo. Born May 13, 1849; was married to Hiram Pond March 26, 1868, who died May 12, 1869. One little daughter blessed her home for a while, but on Feb. 14, 1885, the little daughter went to live with the angels. She was married to Geo. M. Surry Dec. 19, 1880, who died Dec. 11, 1885. Mrs. Surry was united in marriage to T. J. Littleton May 4, 1889, and lived happily together till her death. She leaves to mourn for her the bereaved husband, whose constant care she had been during so many long months; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Fite hear Novelty, Mrs. Laura Boggs of near Leonard, Mrs. Emily Kennedy of Lucien, Okla., and Mrs. Cora McKenny, late of Montana; one brother, John Herlbert of Regina, Idaho, and many near relatives and friends.

About 20 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Littleton united with the Christian church at Leonard and though her health did not permit the to attend church she loved the house of God, loved her Savior and delighted in his worship, and many times her friends gathered in her room at her request and sang the songs she loved and read and prayed with her. Prayer always seemed to soothe and comfort her. It has been said "Prayer is our deepest yearning, a mournful song in deep distress, a longing glance toward heaven. It is the love of life to the heart, its last comfort in the pains of death, and its hymn of praise in the realms of heaven." When friends would sing "Some Sweet Day" she would always join in singing and just before she sank into unconsciousness to quiet her a friend sang to her. She tried to sing, we understood, "Some Sweet Day, Some Sweet Day." It was a sweet day on the other side when she clasped again the little hand that slipped from her loving clasp long years since. Mothers don't forget. We see from her brief life history, much sorrow was her portion. She tenderly cared for her mother during her last years. During her sickness many friends and neighbors came and others at a distance wrote loving messages to bless and cheer her lonely hours.

Funeral services were held at Novelty Christian church March 27, 1918, conducted by Rev. Robison of Nickellton, assisted by Rev. W. C. Maggart of Shelbyville, after which her body was placed beside her loved ones in the cemetery at Novelty.
