Mr. Walter R. Head passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Born on Oct. 31, 1926, in Mammoth Springs, Ark., to George and Cleo (Consulas) Head, he was 84 years old.
Mr. Head proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was in the North Pacific aboard the USS Salinas. He married Betty Lea Smith on Aug. 25, 1947, and this union lasted until Betty's passing in 1999.
Mr. Head spent 35 years with the Missouri Highway Department, mostly in construction, in and around southern Missouri. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. Head was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Head; sister, Pauline Forrester; infant brother, Emmett; and his son, Sammy Head, in 2002.
He is survived by his daughter Barbara Layton and her husband Brad of Town and Country, Mo.; his son Dan Head of Maryville, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Doug Fisk, Matthew Head, Anne Head, Brandon Layton, Ian Head, Megan Layton, Joshua Head; four great grandchildren, Kyle Fist, Mikaela Fisk, Connor Head, and Abigail Head. Further surviving are 16 nieces and nephews including; Frankie Girdley, Bonita Malone, Sue Taylor, Jim Forrester, Bruce Smith and Randy Smith. Mr. Head leaves behind a life-long friend and hunting companion, Delbert McCart.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Willow Funeral Home in Willow Springs. Burial followed the service at the Willow Springs City Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Willow Funeral Home.
