A former Steele man, Merlon Utley, was killed in a one-car accident early Tuesday morning, when his 1965 Cadillac went out of control and ran in a ditch near the Route U-Highway 61 intersection.
Utley, 36, had been here on a business trip and was driving west when the wreck occurred.
A Laforge ambulance was called to the scene at about 3. Utley was dead on arrival at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital. Investigating officer surmised that the accident had occurred at about 2:30.
He had moved with his family to Hot Springs, Ark. from Steele less than a year ago.
Born at Cooter on August 9, 1929, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Utley and had lived all of his life in the Steele area.
In addition to his parents, survivors are his wife and four children, Mrs. Willamette Utley, Merlon Lynn, Mack Dale, Joy and June, of Hot Springs and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Oakley of LaForge and O.S. Utley of Steele.
Services were held at the Baptist Church in Steele Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Jas. F. McCrary officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with German Funeral Home in charge.
