Herbert Dale Brill, 91, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 26, 2016 at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri. He was born August 25, 1925 in Graff, Missouri, the third of the nine children of William Bryan and Bessie Myrtle (Scott) Brill.
Herbert graduated from Mountain Grove High School, Mountain Grove, Missouri, with the class of 1944. On September 14, 1944 he was inducted into the United States Army. During World War II he served in Europe as a rifleman and first scout with the 329th Infantry, 83rd Thunderbold Division, and took part in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded the order of the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during a scouting patrol through Barby, Germany, on April 13, 1945. Upon his return to active duty, he was a mechanized section leader with the 35th Constabulary Squadron at Fuessen, Germany, where he directed a crew of 11 men who patrolled highways, manned checkpoints, and performed other police duties.
Honorably discharged on August 2, 1946, just shy of his 21st birthday, he returned to Missouri and purchased a farm in Douglas County, south of Cabool. He married Elvira McClenahan on December 25, 1948. They had been married 68 years and a day at the time of his passing.
Herbert and “Shorty” had six children and raised them on their Douglas County farm. A farmer all his life, Herbert also was employed for many years at the Cabool MFA Farmers Exchange, where he first worked as feed delivery driver then became store manager, a position he held for ten years.
He was as a prolific gardener, sharing his bountiful harvests with family and friends. He enjoyed following Cardinals baseball, Missouri State basketball and attending his great-grandchildren’s sporting events. Herbert was a Christian man with strong love and loyalty for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley in 1998, and by two brothers, Elwyn Brill and Nuel Brill. Herbert is survived by his wife, Elvira, of the home; two sons, Bob and Judy Brill and Burton Brill of Cabool; three daughters, Dala and Tom Whittaker and Lori and Jim Perry of Cabool, and Carol and Harry Widmeyer of Battlefield, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, Tammy Mickler, Stephen Brill, Cary Kinder, Kristi Stillwell, Kathi Davis, Scott Whittaker, Travis Brill, Sarah Jones, Nathan Perry, Rachelle Scott, Kelly Sweet, Zach Perry, Staci Estep, Matthew Roberts, Bo Brill and Randy Brill; 22 great-grandchildren, Tiffany Hays, Brianna Mertens, Taylor Cannon, Bryan Brill, Lacy Stuart, Channing Burd, Nolan Stillwell, Broderick Davis, Aaron Brill, Logan Stillwell, Baylee Brill, Cason Kinder, Braxton Davis, Trevin Brill, Jessica Brill, Grayson Jones, Lane Scott, Noelle Perry, Josie Whittaker, Selma Perry, Ellison Scott and Wyatt Estep; one great-great-grandchild, Noah Cannon; two sisters, Elouise Updegraff of Manassas, Virginia, and Iolene Hagan of Hazelton, Idaho; and four brothers, Gene Brill of Cabool, Gerald Brill of Arlington, Virginia, Lyle Brill of Titusville, Florida, and Dwight Brill of Cabool; plus many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
