TWO DROWNED IN SUBMERGED CAR IN MISS. RIVER
Youth and Woman Lose Lives Near Black Island Saturday Night-Two Other Youths Have Narrow Escape:
Two Persons were drowned and two others narrowly escaped which they were riding dived into overflow waters of the Mississippi River on the Black Island road northeast of the city last Saturday night.
Drowned were:
MRS. OZELMA HOWLEY, 45, of near Steele.
LEIGHTON DeVANEY, 20, son of Clifton Devaney, farmer, of near Steele.
The two who escaped were Leonard Earl Cox, 20, and Ralph Stow Jr., 23, both also of Steele. They escaped death by swimming to a nearby tree to which they clung until rescued.
The body of Mrs. Howley was in the 1937 two-door Chevrolet sedan when it was pulled from the water by a Bain Motor Company wrecker at 2 a.m Sunday morning. She was not identified until later that morning.
DeVaney's body was found in the water near the scene of the tragedy later that morning.
The four people were riding in the car, owned by DeVaney, but driven by Earl Cox, with the woman and DeVaney in the rear seat. Travelling east on the gravel road leading to Black Island, the car was driven up over the levee, and when it started down on the other side, the driver discovered the swollen river covering the road. The brakes failed and the car continued out into the water for about 25 or 30 feet, becoming completely submerged.
Cox and Stow were rescued by Thos. K. Huey, 27, of Caruthersville, and Lonnie Davidson, 53, of Hayti who happened to be nearby when the accident happened.
Coroner Jack Kelley of Hayti conducted an investigation but stated that he found the death accidental, so no coroner's jury was called.
